6 Most Likely Things to Go Wrong with your Vehicle
Maintain to Avoid a Costly Crash
When’s the last time you had your vehicle in for maintenance? If you’re like most people, you tend to put it off a bit longer than you should. In fact, most people put it off too long, and end up needing costly repairs instead of moderately priced maintenance.
Here at Big Sky Crash Repair Center, our goal is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive. So we have rounded up the most likely things to go wrong with your vehicle that could lead to damage. While we don’t do regular mechanical maintenance here, we do fix auto body damage. Damage that could happen because you get in a wreck after not maintaining your rig.
Most Likely Things to Go Wrong with your Car
These aren’t the only things that could go wrong with your vehicle, but they’re the most likely.
Dead Battery – A dead battery isn’t going to cause you to careen off the side of the road and plow into a parked car. But it could leave you and your vehicle stranded. Anytime your vehicle is left away from your care, it risks getting damaged by vandalism, weather, animals, or aliens. Batteries don’t last forever, make sure you have yours replaced when it’s getting close to the end of its expected life.
Damaged or Worn Tires – Montana weather is considered harsher on vehicles than many other states. There are two reasons for this: huge temperature swings, and dry air. We’re semi-arid and we get really hot and really cold. When you’re driving, your tires wear out. In our climate, they dry out as well. Blowing a tire at any speed can be bad news.
Blown Alternator – Your alternator is designed to maintain the charge on your battery so that when you go to start the vehicle, it cranks right up. If your alternator isn’t working, your battery dies. If your alternator is trying to recharge (instead of maintain) the battery, it gets overworked and may need replaced.
Faulty Starter – Your starter is what provides the sudden burst of power to the engine to get it cranked up. It goes through a lot of wear and tear. When it dies, you likely won’t be able to get the vehicle running and that means you may have to leave your vehicle in an unsavory location overnight (see dead battery issue).
Worn Spark Plugs – Spark plugs last a long time… but not forever. I once had a mechanic tell me, “I’ve seen spark plugs more worn out than yours, but not often.” Your tune ups should include replacing the plugs to make sure your vehicle is firing properly, and not overexerting itself.
Busted Timing Belt – The timing belt makes sure the pistons and valves work in a synchronized fashion. If one of the notches on the belt misses, you end up with a damaged valve. That can cost thousands of dollars to fix. If the belt breaks while you’re driving along, it can cause an accident. Because of our harsh climate, most people want to replace the belt before the manufacturer suggests replacing it.
